Ontario Wildfires: Precautionary Evacuation Notice Issued for Centennial Lake Residents

Residents living near Centennial Lake, Ontario, have been evacuated following a 24-hour precautionary evacuation notice issued by the Madawaska Township. As of Sunday, about 50 hectares were engulfed in flames.

Wildfires in Ontario

The Centennial Lake fire is one of the 21 new fires that have sparked in Ontario since Sunday, with many more to be expected in the coming days, say officials.

The wildfires have already scorched through approximately 31,000 hectares, which is around half the size of Toronto City and 3,000 hectares more than the 10-year average by this point in the season.

Shayne McCool, the fire adviser with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, mentioned that the current wildfire season remains volatile, and the number of fires and area burned are expected to increase in the short term.

Evacuation

The Greater Madawaska township issued the evacuation notice and listed four precautionary evacuation areas, including a local tent and trailer park. It remains uncertain how many residents have been affected, but they are mostly seasonal residents due to the sparsely populated area.

The township’s fire department has already evacuated 50 people, and another 200 could be removed from the area. Officials are monitoring the situation closely and working with fire ranger crews and the local fire department to ensure resident protection and containment of the fire.

Weather Conditions

There is an absence of precipitation in the forecast, which is concerning for officials monitoring the situation. McCool has emphasized the need to carefully monitor weather conditions to see how they will impact fire behavior and new fires’ creation. Officials have restricted some travel around wildfires near Cochrane and White River, calling on residents to use extra caution when entering the bush or camps.

Cothran’s Mayor, Peter Politis, mentioned that seven out of ten fires in the area were not yet under control, but the situation was “manageable.” He has urged residents to avoid going into the forest and taking extra precautions as the forecast indicates a high risk of wildfire outbreaks.

Conclusion

The wildfire situation in Ontario is not under control, and officials predict further wildfires to occur in the upcoming days. In the face of such a situation, residents must listen to and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their and their families’ safety. It is essential to take extra precautions and avoid engaging in any activities that may spark a wildfire outbreak.
