Westford’s Kassidy Carmichael to play hockey, lacrosse at Ohio State
In an exciting development for Westford Academy junior Kassidy Carmichael, she has verbally committed to play both ice hockey and lacrosse at Ohio State University. This achievement brings her one step closer to her dream of representing the United States as a member of the women’s Olympic hockey team.
Carmichael’s decision to pursue both sports in college is a testament to her dedication and skill. As a member of the Ghosts team, she has already amassed an impressive 314 career points in just two years. Her talent has not gone unnoticed, as she recently made the first cut for the U18 USA Select Team.
A Dual Sport Athlete
Playing two sports at the Division 1 college level is a rare feat, requiring a combination of skill, drive, and perseverance. However, Carmichael has proven herself to be more than capable of taking on this challenge. She will join the Ohio State women’s hockey team in the fall of 2025 and then transition to lacrosse after the hockey season.
Choosing Ohio State was not an easy decision for Carmichael, as she had offers from other prestigious schools such as Penn State and Boston College. However, she ultimately chose Ohio State due to the strength of their hockey program and the support of their coaching staff. The opportunity to play under Coach Nadine Muzerall, who has turned the program around in just a few years, was a major factor in her decision.
The Importance of Flexibility
One aspect that stood out to Carmichael about Ohio State was the flexibility shown by the coaching staff in accommodating her dual-sport aspirations. The coaches for both hockey and lacrosse have agreed to work together to create a schedule that allows Carmichael to seamlessly transition from one sport to the other without sacrificing her performance in either.
This commitment to flexibility and support is crucial for Carmichael’s success as a dual-sport athlete. Transitioning from hockey to lacrosse requires a balance of physical and mental preparation, and the coaches at Ohio State have shown a willingness to ensure Carmichael has the necessary resources and support to excel in both sports.
A Homegrown Athlete
What sets Carmichael apart is her humble nature and relentless work ethic. From a young age, she has dedicated countless hours to practicing and honing her skills. Her natural talent, combined with her internal drive to be the best, has positioned her as a standout athlete in her high school career.
Coach Julie Olivier, who has coached several D1 college lacrosse players at Westford Academy, believes Carmichael has the potential to achieve great things in both hockey and lacrosse. She compares her to Kenzie Kent, who played ice hockey and lacrosse at Boston College and holds records in both sports.
Carmichael’s impressive accomplishments in high school, alongside her determination and mental toughness, make her a formidable force to be reckoned with in college. Her commitment to playing both sports at the Division 1 level speaks to her passion and dedication to her craft.
Editorial and Advice
