Fact Check: Image Does Not Show Donald Trump’s Mugshot from Fulton County

The Claim

An Instagram post circulating on August 23rd claims to show a mugshot of former President Donald Trump from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. The post asserts that the image is breaking news and has received over 45,000 likes in one day.

Fact Check Result: Altered

The claim that the image shows Donald Trump’s mugshot from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is false. As of the morning of August 24th, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office had not released any mugshots of Trump. It is expected that Trump will turn himself in that afternoon, at which point fingerprints and a mugshot will be taken.

Georgia Indictment

On August 14th, a Georgia grand jury indicted Donald Trump, along with several others, on charges of attempting to steal President Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory in the state. The indictment brought a total of 41 charges against 19 defendants. Mugshots of two of the accused, bondsman Scott Hall and Trump campaign attorney John Eastman, were released on August 22nd. As of the morning of August 24th, nine mugshots had been released, including those of Trump allies Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, and Sidney Powell.

Treatment of Defendants by Fulton County Sheriff’s Office

Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat stated that if Trump were to be charged, he would be treated like any other defendant. Sheriff Labat confirmed that the normal practices would be followed and that a mugshot would be taken. This dispels any notions that Trump would receive special treatment due to his status as a former president.

Trump’s Turn-In & Bond

As reported by USA TODAY, Donald Trump intends to turn himself in to the Fulton County jail in the afternoon of August 24th. His lawyers have agreed to a $200,000 bond, which will allow him to remain out of jail while awaiting trial. However, as of the morning of August 24th, there were no results for Trump in a search of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office jail records.

Past Debunked Claims

It is worth noting that previous claims regarding Trump’s arrest, including images circulating in March and a purported mugshot after his first arraignment in April, were already debunked by USA TODAY.

Fair Treatment under the Law

The statement by Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat regarding the treatment of defendants, including Trump, reaffirms the importance of fair treatment under the law. Regardless of one’s status, everyone should be subject to the same legal procedures and protocols. This principle reflects the democratic ideals of equality and justice for all.
