Bird Box: Barcelona Review
Unnecessary yet not unwatchable Netflix spin-off
Plot and Setting
Bird Box: Barcelona takes place in the city of Barcelona, shifting the action from California. The film replaces Sandra Bullock’s character with Mario Casas, known for his role in The Invisible Guest. The story follows Casas’ character, Sebastián, as he navigates a world where mysterious creatures have arrived and drive people to commit suicide if they look at them. The film introduces an intriguing reversal in the first act, which turns Sebastián’s mission from mere survival into something much more troubling.
A Different Perspective
Unlike the original film, Bird Box: Barcelona focuses on the perspective of characters who see the arrival of the creatures as a blessing rather than a curse. This shift adds an interesting dynamic to the story and allows the film to explore the danger of religious fervor. The portrayal of this theme is admirably bleak and provides believable commentary. However, the film’s attempt to address the buzzword du jour of the horror genre, trauma, is less clear-eyed. The exploration of grief and loss feels scattered and lacks depth.
Nifty Set Pieces and Entertaining Moments
Despite its flaws, Bird Box: Barcelona manages to be nastier and at times more entertaining than its predecessor. The writer-director duo Alex and David Pastor create some efficient and unsettling set pieces, including a gnarly mass subway suicide scene. The film’s grittier atmosphere adds to its entertainment value. However, without the anchor of Sandra Bullock and the strong supporting cast from the original film, Bird Box: Barcelona can feel inconsequential at times.
Technical Issues and Overexplanation
The sequel suffers from some of the same problems that plagued the first film, particularly in its ineffective visual effects and the overexplanation of the creatures. The visuals chosen to announce the presence of the creatures are cheap and lack impact. Additionally, an unnecessary monologue explaining the quantum mechanics behind the monsters falls flat and disrupts the narrative flow.
The Future of the Bird Box Universe
Bird Box: Barcelona sets up the potential for more spin-offs in different cities. While the film is competent and offers unexpected narrative elements, Netflix would be wise to close this chapter sooner rather than later. The spin-off serves as a decent follow-up for those interested in revisiting the Bird Box universe, but it lacks the staying power and impact of the original film.
Conclusion
Bird Box: Barcelona is an unnecessary yet not unwatchable spin-off that attempts to capitalize on the success of its predecessor. While it falls short in terms of originality, thrills, and character depth, the film manages to provide some entertaining aspects and a fresh perspective on the story. However, Netflix should carefully consider the future of the Bird Box universe and focus on new, original content that can leave a lasting impression on audiences.
