I can’t believe this is real: Keegan Bradley holds on late to win 2023 Travelers Championship for emotional victory
By | June 25, 2023
In a stunning turn of events at the 2023 Travelers Championship, Keegan Bradley emerged as the victor. This win marks the sixth of Bradley’s PGA Tour career and his second of the season. The Woodstock, Vermont native had a one-shot lead over Chez Reavie going into the final round and managed to extend that to a three-shot win, finishing at 23 under par.
Bradley’s victory was not without its challenges. After a strong start, he experienced a disappointing finish, but his 2-under 68 was enough to hold off Zac Blair and Brian Harman, who finished tied for second at 20 under. Reavie, Scottie Scheffler, and Patrick Cantlay came in at tied for fourth at 19 under. Rory McIlroy and Denny McCarthy finished tied for seventh at 18 under.
A Childhood Dream Realized
For Bradley, this victory was particularly emotional, as he used to visit the tournament as a kid. In a post-match interview, he expressed his disbelief, saying, “Feels unbelievable. I literally can’t believe it. It was a really stressful day. I’m so glad it’s over. Today was a day I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
Bradley’s remarkable performance started with a one-shot advantage over Reavie before McIlroy joined the competition and climbed into third place. Bradley’s lead extended to five shots before the turn, thanks to birdies on the third, fourth, and sixth holes, as well as a Reavie bogey on the fifth. From there, Bradley maintained his composure and cruised through the back nine.
However, his lead was not secure. Blair made a late surge, playing his final six holes at 5 under to finish tied for second. Cantlay and Harman also mounted a strong challenge on the back nine. Bradley experienced a slight stumble with bogeys on the 13th and 14th holes, allowing Cantlay to come within three shots of the lead. But Bradley managed to hold on, making crucial par saves on his final two holes.
Reflecting on the Victory and Season Performance
Bradley’s victory at the Travelers Championship adds to his impressive season. With this win, he now has two victories, a runner-up finish at the Farmers Insurance Open, and four additional top-10 finishes. His earnings for the season have reached a personal record of $8,577,110 on the PGA Tour.
When asked about his golfing performance, Bradley acknowledged his moments of struggle, particularly during his squirrelly stretch on the 13th and 14th holes. However, he expressed gratitude for playing well enough to maintain his lead throughout the tournament.
Additionally, this tournament held significance for Zac Blair, who shot an impressive 8-under 62, earning the low round for the day on Sunday. After undergoing shoulder surgery and missing nearly two years on Tour, Blair’s comeback has been an inspiring journey. With this strong performance, he secured a tied-second finish at the Travelers Championship.
Looking Ahead
The PGA Tour now shifts its focus to the upcoming Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Donald Ross-designed Detroit Golf Club, scheduled from June 29 to July 2. As the season progresses, players will be looking to secure their rankings in preparation for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Overall, Keegan Bradley’s victory at the 2023 Travelers Championship is a testament to his resilience and skill on the course. His emotional reaction shows the impact that this win has had on his career and personal journey. As the season continues, it will be interesting to see if Bradley can maintain this level of performance and build on his success.
