Vásquez dominates in Yankee’s split game against White Sox
The New York Yankees split their doubleheader with the Chicago White Sox as the Yankees’ rookie right-hander, Randy Vásquez, delivered a spotless performance. Vásquez‘s first game on a big league mound proved that he could compete at the highest level, but his second game showed that he could dominate. He fired 5 2/3 strong innings, limiting the Chicago White Sox to two hits to earn his first Major League win. Vásquez was supported by homers from Gleyber Torres and Billy McKinney, who helped seal the 3-0 victory in the nightcap.
A bright future for Vásquez
Vásquez made his Major League debut on May 26, and the Yankees returned him to Triple-A after Thursday’s game, as previously planned. However, the rookie’s success on Thursday has given Yankee’s management confidence in his abilities to perform in the future. Yankee’s manager, Aaron Boone, speaking after Thursday’s game, said: “Between him (Vásquez) and Jhony (Brito), they’ve shown us enough that we know we can go down there in a spot and they’re capable of coming up here and having success. Tonight is only going to bolster his confidence and hopefully continue to bolster his development.”
Severino’s struggles
The Yankee’s lost the opener of Thursday’s twin bill, with Luis Severino struggling during his performance, allowing four runs and six hits over five innings. Severino, who has not had a solid performance in two consecutive games, said: “I’m not 100 percent sure what’s going on, but the bottom line is that I need to fix it. It’s unacceptable,” Severino said. “I can’t go out there and give up three homers every time I get the ball. I need to fix it quick.”
The Yankees’ future
The Yankees are facing an injury crisis with some of their key players, including Aaron Hicks, Aaron Judge, and Gio Urshela. However, the recent performances of the rookies like Vásquez and veterans like Billy McKinney have shown that the Yankees have strength in depth and can compete with or without their star players. As the Yankees move forward in the season, they must continue to nurture their young talents as they may well emerge as key players to help the team reach the playoffs and their championship dreams.
