Summer Game Fest 2023: A Week of Game Reveals
Last week, the Summer Game Fest 2023 was filled with game updates, new reveals, and trailers. The renowned video game journalist, Geoff Keighley, kicked off the event with many highlights for the PlayStation 5 games, including the announcement of the highly-anticipated Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth. The week-long festival ended with a surprise Prince of Persia game, a new 2D Sonic game, and much more. Let’s take a closer look at the game releases and announcements.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
During the festival, Square Enix’s popular ‘Final Fantasy’ series announced the much-awaited Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which is the second part of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy. The game depicts the adventure of Cloud, Aerith, and others out-of-Midgar chasing Sephiroth. Although we only saw a glimpse of gameplay, the new trailer showed expansive fields, chocobos, and Red XIII as a playable character. The game is expected to be released on PlayStation 5 early next year.
Spider-Man 2
Insomniac Games, known for creating amazing PlayStation exclusives, revealed the launch date and box art for the next chapter of their popular Marvel series, ‘Spider-Man 2.’ The trailer showed Peter and Miles in the iconic Spider-Man suits, and although details on the plot were scarce, it is to be released on October 20 exclusively on PlayStation 5.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
A new gameplay trailer for the next adventure in the Prince of Persia series, called ‘The Lost Crown’ was revealed during the festival. This side-scrolling action platformer game will be playable on not only the next-generation platforms, including PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, but it will also have a vibrant art style that makes it stand out. The game is set to release on January 18, 2024.
Mortal Kombat 1
We also saw a gruesome gameplay trailer for the upcoming game in the long-running ‘Mortal Kombat’ series. The trailer revealed the new assist mechanic, which enables players to call in other Mortal Kombat characters to help them mid-battle. The close-up shots of fatalities showed the game’s signature gory and violent nature that fans love.
Sonic Superstars
A classic 2D Sonic game is coming this fall, featuring four-player co-op, allowing players to select Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. It boasts a 3D art style, similar to Classic Sonic’s previous appearances in Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces. The game is expected to release on all platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
Editorial and Advice
The Summer Game Fest was a much-anticipated event for gamers worldwide. Game developers displayed their creativity and hard work during the event, revealing new gameplay, trailers, and brand new game releases. The festival was successful in giving video game enthusiasts a glimpse of the exciting content coming out in the future.
However, while the event contained many showstoppers, we must address the problem of violence and gore in several of the game trailers. The Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay trailer proudly highlighted the game’s gruesome fatalities, which could be a problem for youngsters and those sensitive to gore. Therefore, it’s necessary for game developers to consider and prioritize appropriate content in video game trailers.
Overall, the Summer Game Fest 2023 created a lot of buzz in the gaming world, with many new game announcements and reveals for next year. We continue to encourage developers to prioritize appropriate content when creating trailers and gameplay snippets, making the show accessible to everyone who shares the same passion for video games.
