Ryder Cup 2023: Patrick Cantlay Denies Report of Ryder Cup Protest and Locker Room Fracture
By Joel Beall | September 30, 2023
Rome – The United States team at the Ryder Cup may have found themselves caught up in controversy ahead of the final day of the tournament. Reports emerged on Saturday from Sky Sports claiming there was a “fracture” in the U.S. locker room, with Patrick Cantlay being the alleged cause. It was also rumored that Cantlay was protesting by not wearing a hat, believing that players should be paid for their participation in the Ryder Cup.
A Controversial Report?
However, multiple sources close to the United States team and Cantlay’s camp have come forward to deny these allegations. It is important to note that Cantlay has previously played without a hat at the 2021 Ryder Cup, and his decision to do so at the current tournament was unrelated to any protest.
Despite these denials, the news of the report spread throughout the venue, with fans even taking off their hats and waving them in Cantlay’s direction. The golfer responded by winning the final two holes of his match against Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick, and at the 18th hole, he mimed a cap-tip to the crowd while his teammates showed their appreciation by removing their hats.
After the round, Cantlay addressed the reports, stating that the reason he was not wearing a hat was simply because it didn’t fit properly. Regarding the question of whether players should be paid for participating in the Ryder Cup, Cantlay maintained that his focus was solely on representing Team USA and his country.
Team Unity and Bonding
Various U.S. players refuted the claims of team discord at a press conference, expressing their camaraderie and unity. Brian Harman emphasized that the players love each other and have had an incredible time together. In response to a question about Zach Johnson’s comments regarding the team feeling under the weather, Max Homa jokingly remarked that they were all just sick of Cantlay not wearing a hat.
Homa further highlighted the enjoyment and bonding he has experienced with his teammates throughout the week. He emphasized the importance of staying in the moment and taking each shot as it comes. Despite the American team facing a significant deficit, they have not lost sight of their mission and remain focused on making a historic comeback.
A Chance for Redemption
After a challenging start, the Americans won the Saturday afternoon fourballs session, giving them an opportunity to mount a comeback on the final day. Cantlay’s statement that the team is on a mission indicates their determination to turn the tide and potentially secure victory.
The controversy surrounding Cantlay’s hat, along with the reported locker room fracture, could have created distractions for the American team. However, their response has shown resilience and a cohesive spirit. As they face a crucial day ahead, it will be intriguing to see if they can overcome the odds and reclaim the Ryder Cup.
