Whitesnake Guitarist Bernie Marsden Dies at 72

A Legendary Guitarist and A Musical Legacy

Bernie Marsden, the original guitarist for the iconic rock band Whitesnake, has passed away at the age of 72, as confirmed by his family. In a statement posted on Instagram, his family announced that Marsden died peacefully on Thursday evening, surrounded by his wife, Fran, and daughters, Charlotte and Olivia. Despite his illness, Marsden never lost his passion for music, continuing to write and record new songs until the end.

Marsden was widely regarded as one of the UK’s foremost rock and blues guitarists, leaving a lasting impact on the music industry. As a member of Whitesnake, he co-wrote several of the band’s hit songs, including the timeless classics “Fool for Your Loving,” “Here I Go Again,” “Walking in the Shadow of the Blues,” and “She’s a Woman.” His creative riffs and intricate guitar playing helped shape the sound and success of the band.

From UFO to Whitesnake

Born in Buckingham in 1951, Marsden’s musical journey began with the rock band UFO in 1972. After his time with UFO, Marsden went on to collaborate with former Deep Purple members in a short-lived project called Paice Ashton Lord. It was in 1978 that Marsden co-founded Whitesnake in London, along with former Deep Purple singer David Coverdale and guitarist Micky Moody.

Marsden’s contributions to Whitesnake are undeniable, as he performed on the band’s first EP, five albums, and a live album, from Snakebite in 1978 to Saints & Sinners in 1982. He also released two solo albums during this period, showcasing his versatility and talent as a musician.

A Passion for Guitars

Aside from his musical legacy, Marsden was well-known for his extensive and coveted private guitar collection. With more than 200 pieces in his possession, Marsden’s appreciation for the instrument was evident. His passion for guitars was exemplified by his decision to briefly put up one of his prized possessions, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard known as “The Beast,” for sale with a staggering price tag exceeding $1.3 million in June 2023.

Saying Farewell to a Friend and Musician

Following the news of Bernie Marsden’s passing, his former Whitesnake bandmate David Coverdale took to social media to pay tribute. In a heartfelt message posted on Twitter, Coverdale expressed his sorrow and offered his thoughts and prayers to Marsden’s family, friends, and fans. Coverdale described Marsden as a genuinely funny and gifted man, and expressed gratitude for the time they spent together on stage.

The loss of Bernie Marsden leaves a void in the music industry, as his contributions to rock and blues guitar are immeasurable. His talent, passion, and dedication to his craft will forever be remembered. Marsden’s influence will continue to inspire future generations of musicians, and his music will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the annals of rock and roll history.

Rest in peace, Bernie Marsden. The guitar world mourns the loss of a true legend.
