Remembering Sherry Pollex: A Philanthropic Force in the NASCAR Community
A Life Dedicated to Fighting Cancer
Sherry Pollex, a prominent figure in the NASCAR community and a fierce advocate in the fight against cancer, passed away at the age of 44. Her family announced her passing on Sunday, revealing that she had succumbed to the disease she had been battling since her diagnosis in 2014. Pollex’s philanthropic efforts were instrumental in founding Catwalk for a Cause, a charity fashion gala that united the NASCAR industry in the fight against childhood cancer. The event, which began in 2010, has raised over $4 million for initiatives combating the disease.
Pollex’s dedication to cancer advocacy expanded beyond childhood cancer. After being diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer at the age of 35, she sought to bring attention to a form of the disease that had seen minimal advancements in treatment and care protocols over the last three decades. Her efforts included funding research to battle ovarian cancer and culminated in the establishment of the Sherry Strong Integrative Medicine Oncology Clinic in partnership with Novant Health in Charlotte in 2020.
A Champion for Stock-Car Racing and the Community
In recognition of her profound impact on the sport of stock-car racing, Pollex and her former partner Martin Truex Jr. were honored with the National Motorsports Press Association’s Myers Brothers Award in 2017. This prestigious accolade celebrated their outstanding contributions to the sport. Furthermore, Pollex was a finalist for the Comcast Community Champion of the Year Award in 2022, further solidifying her status as a beacon of hope and inspiration within the NASCAR community.
Pollex’s charismatic nature and unwavering commitment to helping others shone brightly at the recently concluded 2023 edition of Catwalk for a Cause, where she was unable to attend due to her deteriorating health. Nevertheless, in introductory remarks, the event’s co-hosts praised her as an “absolute hero,” leading the crowd to rise in a standing ovation. NASCAR released a statement expressing their sadness at Pollex’s passing and acknowledging her unwavering determination and inspiration to those who knew her.
An Extraordinary Life Fueled by Passion
Sherry Pollex was born in Marshall, Michigan, on May 10, 1979, before later moving with her family to Brighton, Michigan. Her proximity to the Michigan International Speedway cultivated her love for NASCAR racing, as she attended races with her family in her youth. Even before her family’s involvement with motor racing, she was an avid supporter of the Detroit Red Wings hockey team. When she was diagnosed with cancer years later, the Red Wings sent her a care package and a heartfelt get-well letter.
Born into a racing family, Pollex’s father, Greg, was a former race car driver. His team, ppc Racing, achieved success in what is now known as the Xfinity Series, winning the championship in 2000. Pollex’s early exposure to the world of NASCAR and her subsequent job at a marketing firm with NASCAR accounts solidified her passion for the sport. It was during this time that she encountered Martin Truex Jr., who was in the early stages of his career in the Xfinity Series. The couple would go on to leverage their platform as NASCAR figures to make a difference in the lives of children and families affected by pediatric cancer through Truex’s foundation.
An Inspiring Legacy
Sherry Pollex’s diagnosis in 2014 came as a shock, but it never dimmed her spirit. Facing a 30% chance of survival, she relished each day and never lost her positive outlook, even when battling Stage 3C ovarian cancer. Her unwavering gratitude for life and her ability to find beauty in the world around her served as an inspiration to many.
Pollex’s legacy as a champion of philanthropy and an ambassador in the fight against cancer is a powerful one. While she never expected to become the “poster child” for any type of cancer, she recognized the importance of her role in paving the way for other women. Her determination to leave a lasting impact and help others was evident throughout her journey, earning her the respect and admiration of the NASCAR community and beyond.
In the wake of Sherry Pollex’s passing, it is essential to celebrate her life and continue her mission to eradicate cancer. Donations to the Sherry Strong Foundation can be made by clicking here.
