On this day, we honor the courage and bravery of African Americans who fought for their freedom, recognizing their strength and resilience. It is a time to celebrate the progress we have achieved and to acknowledge that our fight for racial justice is ongoing.

Remembering the Struggles

The recent tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many others have not only highlighted the troubled relationship between law enforcement and Black and other communities of color but have also raised broader questions about systemic discrimination, economic inequality, and equal employment opportunity. As the descendant of enslaved persons and the Chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), I am acutely aware of the responsibility that comes with leading an agency committed to preventing and remedying workplace discrimination.

Today, despite significant progress, the EEOC continues to receive reports of harassment cases involving racist graffiti, references to slavery and lynching, and even nooses in workplaces across the country. These acts of hatred and bigotry are a stark reminder of the urgency of the EEOC‘s work. They call upon all of us to be vigilant and proactive in ensuring that our workplaces are free from discrimination and harassment.

As Chair of the EEOC, I am committed to leading our agency’s efforts in reimagining the workplace and empowering individuals to confront systemic barriers.
