RC Lens Holds PSV Eindhoven to a Draw in the Champions League
Sang et Or’s Striker, Elye Wahi, Scores Sublime Equalizer
In a thrilling match on Tuesday, RC Lens faced off against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the third round of the Champions League. The game ended in a 1-1 draw at the Bollaert stadium, with Lens relying on their striker Elye Wahi to score the equalizing goal. This was Wahi’s second goal in the Champions League this season, and the Lens team continues their undefeated run in the competition.
Lensois resilience in the face of adversity
Despite being behind in the game and lacking creativity in their play, Lens managed to wake up after the hour mark and secure a draw at home against PSV Eindhoven. The result keeps the Dutch team’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive. With five points, Lens now sits in second place in Group B, as Arsenal, with one point more, claimed the top spot after a 2-1 victory against Sevilla. PSV Eindhoven remains in the last position with two points.
Scuffles between Dutch ultras and law enforcement
Prior to kick-off, there were altercations between Dutch ultras and law enforcement outside the stadium. Although calm was restored outside the Bollaert stadium, clashes between supporters from both sides erupted during halftime. These disturbances in the stands contrasted with a lackluster first half on the pitch.
Inconsistent performance from RC Lens
The players from RC Lens struggled to find their rhythm for almost an hour, lacking the same intensity and tenacity shown in previous matches against Sevilla and Arsenal. Despite starting well and putting pressure on PSV Eindhoven, Lens failed to convert their opportunities. Elye Wahi missed a chance to score after a dangerous cross from the right side, and Deiver Machado’s shot failed to trouble the former OGC Nice goalkeeper, Walter Benitez.
After the initial spark, Lens struggled to maintain their tempo and momentum. It was Mexican winger Hirving Lozano who came closest to scoring in the first half, hitting the left post with a curling shot. The second half saw Lens lose their rhythm even further, allowing PSV Eindhoven to dominate for a good fifteen minutes before finally conceding a goal. Belgian winger Johan Bakayoko found the back of the net with a floating shot, catching Lens goalkeeper Brice Samba off guard.
Mental strength at the heart of Lens’ game
Sensing that the match was slipping away, Lens coach Franck Haise made a triple offensive substitution, bringing in David Pereira da Costa, Adrien Thomasson, and Wesley Saïd. This immediate change had a positive effect as Lens pushed forward with more numbers. Elye Wahi, who scored the winning goal against Arsenal, once again proved his worth in the Champions League. He unleashed a spectacular volley from a cross by Frankowski to equalize in the 65th minute.
Lens came close to turning the tide of the match in the four minutes that followed Wahi’s goal, proving the coach’s statement after a draw against Lille in Ligue 1: “Mental resources are part of our DNA. We must not give up on that.” Despite a few more chances, Lens had to settle for a draw against what seemed to be the most beatable opponent. To secure a spot in the round of 16 in the prestigious European club competition, Lens will likely have to defeat PSV Eindhoven again in their next match, this time in Eindhoven on November 8th.
