Calgary Mourns Loss of a Generous and Selfless Worker

Calgary was struck by the tragic death of a 27-year-old worker, Liam Johnston, who died while working in a residential neighbourhood in northwest Calgary. Liam Johnston was a kind-hearted and compassionate person whose death has left a void in the hearts of his colleagues, friends, and family.

A Tragic Accident

The accident occurred when a trench collapsed on Thursday, June 8, 2021, during sewer repairs being carried out along an alleyway in the community of Charleswood. The Calgary Fire Department tech rescue team was deployed, and an excavator and hydro vac were called in to help save Johnston.

The battalion chief has reported that there was no trench box in place initially, leaving the crew unable to get in the trench safely. According to fire department sources, one of the sides of the trench collapsed while Johnston was inside, trapping him under the ground.

A Heartfelt Tribute

Johnston’s family and friends have been paying tribute to the selfless and generous person that he was. “He was always going to be there for you and give everything he had,” said Emily Gofton, who had been dating Liam since December and worked with him at Mr. Mike’s Plumbing. Bobby Jimerson, who knew Liam for 14 years, described him as a special individual with a very specific personality that drew people towards him.

“Liam always went out of his way to make sure I was okay. He was such a special amazing individual, and I thank God every day that I got to meet him,” expressed Jimerson, his grief palpable.

Safety First

The Occupational Health and Safety investigation is currently underway, and Mr. Mike’s Plumbing has extended its condolences to Johnston’s family. The company highlighted its commitment to safety protocols, ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to prevent similar accidents from happening in the future.

Nobody deserves to die while at work, and it’s essential for employers to take all necessary precautions to protect their employees. Trench safety is a vital part of construction work, and all workers must be adequately trained and equipped with appropriate protective gear and equipment. It’s paramount to ensure that safety is the topmost priority on worksites—failure to do so can result in accidents and, unfortunately, deaths.

Final Words

The tragic loss of Liam Johnston is a stark reminder of the importance of promoting safety in the workplace. It’s an opportunity for employers and workers to review safety procedures and protocols, identifying any gaps and strengthening them where necessary. Our deepest condolences go out to Liam Johnston’s family, friends, and colleagues. May they find the strength to bear this loss.
