WNBA Star Brittney Griner Harassed at Dallas Airport
Phoenix Mercury’s leadership plans to prioritize players’ travel safety following the harassment of their star player, Brittney Griner, at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was confronted by a man described as a “social media provocateur” while en route to a game with her teammates. The altercation, which resulted in the man being tackled and police intervention, occurred due to Griner’s release from Russian custody as part of a prisoner swap that involved Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. The WNBA star was wrongfully detained for nearly 300 days in Russia.
League Will Prioritize Player Safety
Phoenix Mercury’s head coach, Vanessa Nygaard, has assured fans of the team and the league that safety is a top priority. In response to the incident, Nygaard confirmed that they would be making adjustments to ensure the safety of their players and organization. She also stated that they would be following league-established rules and guidelines regarding travel.
WNBA Takes Action
The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) has issued a statement calling for greater flexibility regarding charter flights for athletes. The organization argues that commercial flights pose a threat to players’ health and safety and implores the league and teams to change the rules regarding travel.
Editorial: Safety of Players Should Always Come First
The WNBA has been at the forefront of social justice and fighting against inequality in sports, but the harassment incident that Griner experienced shows the need for further action. It is unacceptable that players are subjected to such behavior, and their safety should always be a priority.
Advice: Proactive Measures Needed for Player Safety
To ensure player safety, proactivity is necessary. The league and teams should implement policies and procedures that prioritize the safety of their players. Charter flights should also be more accessible to prevent unnecessary exposure to risks. Taking action to safeguard WNBA stars like Brittney Griner is crucial in ensuring a safer and more just environment for all players.
