The Fallout from a Tornado at Pfizer Plant Could Worsen Drug Shortages at U.S. Hospitals
A recent tornado that damaged a Pfizer factory in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, has raised concerns about the already-strained drug supplies in U.S. hospitals. The factory, which produces approximately 25% of all sterile injectable medicines used in American hospitals, suffered significant damage to its roof. While all employees were safely evacuated, Pfizer is currently assessing the extent of the damage. The repercussions of this natural disaster are expected to have far-reaching effects on hospital drug supplies, potentially leading to long-term shortages.
Understanding Sterile Injectables
The Pfizer plant in North Carolina specializes in the production of sterile injectables. These are drugs delivered intravenously, under the skin, or into patient muscles. The plant manufactures anesthesia drugs, anti-infectives, and drugs that temporarily paralyze muscles, commonly used in surgeries or intensive care units for patients on ventilators. It is important to note, however, that the facility does not produce Pfizer‘s COVID-19 vaccines or treatments.
The Impact on Hospital Drug Supplies
The damage to the Pfizer plant is expected to result in long-term shortages as the company shifts production to other locations or rebuilds the affected facility. The specific drugs that may be affected and the duration of the shortage remain unclear at this time. Experts in the field express concern and are anxiously awaiting updates on the situation. While it is likely that some inventory was damaged by the tornado, pharmaceutical companies generally have rapid shipping practices, which may have mitigated the extent of the loss.
Strategies for Hospitals to Manage Shortages
To minimize the impact of drug shortages on patients, hospitals employ various strategies. Some facilities have implemented strategies such as increasing inventories of stored drugs instead of relying solely on regular deliveries from wholesalers. Hospital executives are proactively identifying drugs that may be difficult to obtain and taking steps to secure adequate supplies. Additionally, hospitals may switch to alternative forms of medication, such as using antibiotic pills instead of intravenous administration. They may also order larger vials of a drug, allowing them to fill several syringes with smaller doses for immediate use.
Prevalence of Drug Shortages
Drug shortages have been an ongoing issue in the healthcare industry for years, with hospitals encountering difficulties in accessing essential medications. Currently, shortages are particularly prevalent for drugs used in chemotherapy treatments. However, the impact is not limited to hospitals alone, as drugstores and doctor’s offices are also affected. According to the University of Utah Drug Information Service, there were 309 active drug shortages in the U.S. as of June, the highest recorded total since 2014.
Pfizer‘s Next Steps
Pfizer has yet to announce its course of action following the tornado. Pharmaceutical companies can transfer manufacturing to other facilities, but this process entails challenges such as rerouting raw materials and potentially training new workers. Additionally, Pfizer may have to make decisions about reducing production of other products to accommodate increased manufacturing at alternative sites. According to Mike Ganio, a researcher studying drug shortages at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, increasing production is not as simple as flipping a switch.
