Spectacles Osheaga: A Colorful Return to Normalcy

The 16th Edition of Osheaga Festival Kicks Off

August 4, 2023 – The Osheaga festival launched its 16th edition on Friday at Parc Jean-Drapeau under a mix of clouds and sunshine. The crowd of festival-goers, diverse and vibrant, eagerly marked the long-awaited return to normalcy after the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the late afternoon, evenko, the event organizer, reported that 45,000 people had flocked to the site on Île Sainte-Hélène. Over the course of three days, nearly one hundred artists and bands from the realms of rock, pop, and hip-hop will grace the stages, filling the air with music and delighting the fans.

A Scene of Color and Extravagance

The traditional showcase of Osheaga looks, which compete in originality and exuberance, was already in full swing on the festival grounds and on the yellow line of the metro. With the humidity, many festival-goers wisely opted for bikini tops, crop tops, and crocheted tops. Cowgirl hats, colorful Hawaiian shirts, knitted mini dresses, glitter, transparent pants, denim skirts, and fanny packs were also in abundance. As expected, but with a twist this year, there were a few Barbie and Ken lookalikes scattered throughout the crowd. It was inevitable that the frenzy for the pink world of Mattel’s doll would extend beyond the movie theaters. Fuchsia and candy pink hues could be seen everywhere, creating a festive atmosphere all around.

First-Timers and the Influence of Billie Eilish

Overall, it appears that Generation Z festival-goers are dominating the scene this year, with many attending Osheaga for the first time. Could this be the influence of Billie Eilish? At the very least, her name was frequently mentioned alongside that of the Australian group. For example, friends Laurianne St-Pierre and Emmy Pagé-Levasseur are attending Osheaga for the first time and are excited to see headliners Rüfüs du Sol and Billie Eilish.

The Anticipation for Stellar Performances

Several festival-goers expressed their enthusiasm for the lineup this year. Justin Parent, who has previously attended Escapade Music and ÎleSoniq, is attending Osheaga for the first time with his friends, all dressed in pink. Justin exclaimed, “We love festivals, and this year’s lineup seemed excellent! We came for the adventure, especially for Rüfüs du Sol. Plus, we found out that Charlotte Cardin is replacing Aya Nakamura, and we love Charlotte!”

A Weekend in Pink

Ariane Bolduc and Daphnée Nadeau, caught up in the Barbie phenomenon, happily embraced the opportunity to dress in pink for a day and excitedly anticipated the performances at Osheaga.

A Grand Finale

The Osheaga festival will continue until Sunday night, concluding with the highly anticipated performance by Kendrick Lamar. As festival-goers dance to the rhythm of the music and immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere, Osheaga 2023 proves to be a testament to the enduring spirit of music, fashion, and community.
