Orillia‘s Terry Fox Run Raises Nearly $44,000 for Cancer Research
A Record-Breaking Fundraiser
Organizers of the annual Terry Fox Run in Orillia announced that this year’s event has raised an impressive $43,943.25. This brings the cumulative total raised by the Orillia community since 1988 to over $950,000, a substantial contribution to cancer research. Additionally, for the 15th consecutive year, the Orillia run has surpassed its goal of $1 per resident.
The success of the fundraiser can be attributed to the overwhelming support from the community, including both online donors and participants in the event. Despite looming rain clouds, an estimated 600 people gathered at Tudhope Park in Orillia to walk, run, and cycle in honor of Terry Fox. The enthusiasm and determination of those involved highlight the enduring legacy of Terry Fox and the ongoing fight against cancer.
Remembering the Marathon of Hope
It has been 43 years since Terry Fox embarked on his Marathon of Hope, a cross-country run to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. After being diagnosed with bone cancer and undergoing the amputation of his right leg, Fox’s courage and determination inspired countless individuals. However, his journey was tragically cut short in Thunder Bay when the cancer returned in his lungs, forcing him to abandon the run. Less than a year later, Terry Fox passed away.
Despite Fox’s premature death, his name lives on through The Terry Fox Foundation, which aims to support people affected by cancer and advance cancer research. The Orillia Terry Fox Run serves to commemorate his legacy and amplify his vision for a world without this devastating disease.
Fostering Hope and Progress
For those affected by cancer, the Orillia Terry Fox Run holds deep personal significance. Participants like Brian Pounder, who lost family members to the disease, emphasize the importance of events like this. The ongoing advancements in cancer research, combined with the funds raised from such gatherings, fuel optimism for discovering a cure in the years to come.
Adam Chambers, Simcoe North MP, underscores the vital role that events like the Terry Fox Run play in the fight against cancer. The collective efforts of communities across Canada contribute to the noble goal of eliminating this disease. The Orillia Terry Fox Run stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of Canadians to support cancer research and advocate for those affected by the illness.
Security and the OPP’s Commitment
While Terry Fox is remembered for his remarkable physical feat, it is essential to recognize the behind-the-scenes efforts that made his Marathon of Hope possible. Security personnel, such as those from the OPP Orillia detachment, were instrumental in ensuring Fox’s safety as he journeyed through Ontario. Brent Elbers, the operations manager for the detachment, highlights the enduring influence of Fox’s core values on the OPP’s mission today.
A New Location and Future Fundraising
This year, the Orillia Terry Fox Run took place for the first time at Tudhope Park, as ongoing construction on Centennial Drive and around the waterfront necessitated a change in the event’s location. Despite the unforeseen circumstances, the Orillia community rallied together in support of this important cause.
While the final fundraising results are still being tabulated, the $30,000 raised thus far showcases the incredible dedication of participants and their commitment to Terry Fox’s mission. Moving forward, those interested in supporting the Terry Fox Foundation can continue to donate or begin fundraising for next year’s run.
