Colorful First Pick for the Raptors in the NBA Draft
The NBA draft for the year 2023 took place in New York on Thursday evening, and it was a particularly attention-grabbing moment when the Toronto Raptors made their first choice. Gradey Dick, a highly promising player from the University of Kansas, turned heads not only because of his colorful suit but also because of his impeccable basketball skills. The Raptors had the opportunity to select Dick with the 13th overall pick, though he had been projected to go even higher by several experts.
A Star Shooter
The Raptors certainly have reason to celebrate, as they have acquired the best eligible shooter of this year’s draft. Dick made an impressive 83 shots (40.3%) from downtown during the 2022-2023 season, ranking him second in the Big 12 conference. Speaking to Sportsnet, Raptors’ General Manager Bobby Webster commented, “He’s not just a shooter. I believe he also knows how to play off the ball. He can pass well and rebounds effectively, so I think he is much more well-rounded than people might think, even though he will primarily be viewed as a shooter. I think it was also appealing that he possesses those other skills.”
In a press conference, the confident 19-year-old expressed his main goal is to make an immediate impact, stating, “I want to come to Toronto and show them the quality of my shots, which is the thing I am most proud of.” Indeed, Dick’s shooting ability could significantly assist the Raptors, who ranked 19th and 28th in three-point shooting percentage in the last two seasons, respectively.
A Star Attitude
Confidence is also needed to pull off a sparkling red suit, and fan reactions to Dick’s draft night outfit were significant. It’s clear that Gradey Dick is unafraid to be himself and embrace his outgoing personality. “I will never try to be someone I am not, like coming out of the tunnel with no expression and trying to be too cool for nothing. I will never be like that, and I will never lose that either. That’s when I have the most fun in life, when I’m playing basketball and can show my emotions,” Dick stated during his training in Toronto last week.
With Darko Rajakovic now leading the team as head coach, changes can be expected for the Raptors. Dick has reportedly made a positive impression on the new coach, and Webster was impressed by his intelligence and 6-foot-8-inch stature. “I want to come into this organization and accept the role that the coach gives me, it suits me perfectly,” Dick affirmed. “It’s just basketball in the end. I just love being on the court.”
Future Moves for the Raptors
The next step for the Raptors is the upcoming free agency market, which begins in a week. The Toronto team will have some decisions to make, particularly regarding the status of players like Fred VanVleet and Jakob Pöltl, who will become free agents.
