Iga Swiatek wins fourth Grand Slam title after surviving thriller vs Karolina Muchova in French Open 2023 women’s final
Polish professional tennis player, Iga Swiatek, has made tennis history by winning her third French Open title and fourth career major title. The thrilling match was played against the unseeded Karolina Muchova, and it will be remembered as one of the most classic finals at Roland Garros.
Dominant Run of Swiatek
Swiatek came into Roland Garros as the defending champion and the top-ranked player in the world. She was the odds-on favourite to take the title on the red clay in Paris, and she proved this during the entire two weeks leading up to the final. She didn’t drop a set during the tournament, except for the second set against Muchova.
The Match
The beginning of the match was intense, with Swiatek getting off to a fast start by breaking Muchova’s serve early, taking her to a 3-0 lead. After Muchova managed to hold onto her serve, Swiatek continued with her strong performance by winning the first set 6-2. In the second set, Swiatek went up 3-0 again, but Muchova wasn’t going to let Swiatek dominate any further, and fought back with a break to get back into the set 3-2. Swiatek showed some frustration in the fourth game of the second set but managed to trade breaks with Muchova before Muchova won the set in the tiebreaker.
In the third set, Muchova continued with her great form, winning 10 straight points. But Swiatek showed her resilience by breaking Muchova to even things up. Both players went through bouts of excellent shot-making and unforced errors, resulting in a back-and-forth third set with the two players trading breaks. Swiatek proved herself to be the better player by securing a hold and managing to break Muchova’s serve to secure the Suzanne Lenglen Cup for a third time.
Swiatek’s current season
Although she hasn’t replicated her incredible 37-match win streak from the previous season, Swiatek’s grip on the top ranking in the world remains firm. Besides her French Open win, she has won two other titles this season, leaving the No. 2 player, Arnya Sabalenka, behind by more than 1400 WTA ranking points.
Upcoming tournaments
The WTA schedule for June includes grass court tune-ups in Eastbourne and Berlin, which will take place before Wimbledon begins at the All-England Club in London on July 3.
