Lewis Hamilton Hints at Staying with Mercedes after Spanish GP Showing
Seven-time Formula One (F1) champion Lewis Hamilton praised his Mercedes team for delivering their best car in the past year and a half during the recent Spanish Grand Prix. He said that the car has the potential to catch up with championship leaders Red Bull, making him optimistic about the team’s future. He added that he was more focused on having a car that could challenge Red Bull from day one in the next F1 season in 2024.
Encouraging Display of Mercedes in Spanish GP
Hamilton’s second-place finish in the Spanish GP, along with his teammate George Russell’s third place, was an impressive feat for Mercedes. The team has struggled to keep up its performance level with rival teams such as Red Bull and Ferrari. Hamilton’s positive feedback after the event suggested that they had a better chance of catching up with their competitors with their current car.
“Definitely the best the car has been for the last year and a half,” said Hamilton. “It felt the best this weekend, it felt the best yesterday and better today than it’s felt for the past 14, 15 months. That’s super-encouraging, not only for me but for everybody in the team. This will be a big boost for everybody’s morale.”
Hamilton’s Contract Extension with Mercedes
Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes ends this F1 season, and he has been hinting at a possible extension. He expressed his desire to continue racing while also wanting to have the car to challenge Red Bull, particularly Max Verstappen. According to Hamilton, he is set to meet with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff on Monday to finalize the agreement.
“I haven’t signed anything yet, but we’re meeting with Toto on Monday, so hopefully we can get something done,” he said. “I want to keep going, but I want to be where Max is, and I am super-focused on getting to that point. There is a long way to go, but there is time.”
Final Thoughts
Hamilton’s words suggest that he is committed to Mercedes and his goal of being the best F1 racer in the world. With the encouraging display of their car in the Spanish GP, it seems that Mercedes is doing their best to provide Hamilton with the tools he needs to remain competitive in the sport. Let us hope that both Hamilton and Mercedes will continue to dominate and make F1 a thrilling and memorable experience for everyone.
