GlobalFest: Celebrating Cultural Diversity in Calgary
GlobalFest, a widely acclaimed international festival, is returning to Calgary‘s Elliston Park from August 17 to 26. This annual event, which showcases pavilions, international cuisine, and breathtaking fireworks, has been hailed as the “ultimate celebration of diversity.” Chief operating officer, Ken Goosen, emphasized the need to experience the festival in person to fully appreciate its grandeur.
The Aquatic Fireworks Spectacle
One of the most unique features of GlobalFest is the aquatic fireworks display. These fireworks are designed to ignite while floating on the surface of the park’s storm retention pond. This spectacular display is exclusive to a select few Canadian locations, including Vancouver, Gatineau and Sherbrooke in Quebec, and Calgary. Goosen highlighted the importance of using water in their shows, as their teams are judged on their creative use of it.
While some may raise concerns about the environmental impact of the event, Goosen assured that the water at Elliston Park can handle the nature of the festival. The storm retention pond employs recycled water that goes through a filter, ensuring any debris is properly managed. Additionally, given the hot and dry conditions, the fire department will be present on-site equipped with suppression gear to ensure utmost safety.
Safety and Community Concerns
Goosen stressed that the safety of attendees and the community is of utmost priority. With a large team in place to maintain security, he advised the public to come prepared with water and umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun. To further facilitate transportation, those attending the festival are encouraged to utilize the park and ride shuttle service at Sunridge Mall. Furthermore, there is a parking lot on Hubalta Road charging $20, with the funds generated going towards cultural programming. Over the years, this initiative has raised over $400,000.
Celebrating 20 Years of Multiculturalism
Marking its 20th anniversary, GlobalFest remains committed to celebrating Calgary‘s multicultural communities. This year’s fireworks entries will include countries such as Austria, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, culminating in a grand finale from Canada. The gates open at 6 p.m. each night and close at 9:15 p.m. for the fireworks, which begin after darkness falls.
