Germany and Ukraine Draw in a Friendly: A Critical Analysis</h2>
Germany and Ukraine drew 3-3 in an international friendly on June 12th, 2023. Although it was just a friendly match, the result raises a lot of questions about Germany‘s defense and their overall performance. With a back three formation, Germany showed all the same problems that Bayern Munich has faced this season, plus a million more problems specific to the national team itself.
Defensive Issues in Germany‘s Performance
The defense was the weakest link of the German squad, and it became more evident as the game unfolded. The center backs were nonexistent despite the back three formation, and the wingbacks were ineffective. Leroy Sane, who started this game, was invisible and failed to make an impact. With poor possession of the ball and an inability to control the middle of the pitch, the defense repeatedly failed to hold off Ukraine‘s attacks.
Flick’s Strange Choices in Team Selection
Aside from the defensive problems, there were a lot of questions about Hansi Flick’s decisions. When the players were performing poorly, Flick replaced Fullkrug with Havertz, which ended up being the right move considering Havertz was involved in two of Germany‘s goals. However, Flick’s decision to substitute Fullkrug instead of Sane was baffling. In addition, wingbacks remain a weakness for Germany, and it seems that without proper players in that position, this team will not be successful. It may be time for Kimmich to move back out wide, but this would mean sacrificing his preferred central midfield position, which he may not be willing to do.
Editorial: A Debate on Germany‘s Formation and Defensive Style
This performance leads us to consider a crucial question: Is it time for Germany to abandon the back three formation and revert to a back four? The answer may be subjective and may depend on the players available, but it is clear that the back three is not working. On the other hand, it could be argued that Germany‘s problems are deeper than the formation itself. The defensive style that the team adopts seems to be an issue with the central defenders constantly isolated and the midfield not offering enough support.
Philosophical Discussion: Soccer, A Beautiful Game or a Game of Strategy?
At its core, soccer is a game of strategy, and coaches and managers must make tough decisions to win games. However, soccer players and fans cannot forget that it is also a beautiful game that requires creativity and skill. As much as we may focus on the tactical side of the sport, we must remember that the joy of the game comes from seeing players showcase their technical abilities and execute beautiful plays.
Advice: Germany Must Focus on Improving Their Defense
Germany‘s draw against Ukraine is a clear indication that the team needs to put a lot of effort into improving their defense. With Euro 2024 approaching, it is not too late to make changes and implement a new strategy that can better defend the goal and control the midfield. However, Germany must ensure that they do not sacrifice the beautiful style of play that they have been known for, and they must prioritize technical ability and creativity as much as tactical strategy.
