Investigations Launched Following Trench Collapse and Worker Fatality in Calgary
Calgary has been hit by yet another tragedy on June 8, 2023, as a worker who was excavating a trench in the Charleswood community was buried alive in the collapse, as tons of dirt, sand, and debris came cascading down on him. The Calgary Fire Department was deployed to the tragic scene upon the receipt of a distress call, and rescue operations were immediately initiated. However, despite the best efforts from the emergency crew, the young man’s lifeless body was only retrieved late Thursday night.
Concerns Over Safety Protocol Failures
The tragedy has prompted an investigation by Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety, as well as the Calgary Police Service, to ascertain the underlying reasons leading to the trench’s collapse, and subsequent burial of the young man. Early reports suggest the trench, which was estimated to be between three to six meters deep before the collapse, was filled with dirt, sand, and materials from the retaining wall.
Safety expert Dean Winhan is raising concerns over potential safety protocol failures that may have contributed to the young man’s tragic death. He believes that the knowledge and measures to protect workers in such hazardous environments are well-established, “we know how to protect people in excavations or, in this case, ungrounding of the earth. And this is absolutely senseless.”
The Importance of Trench Work Safety
The recovery mission and investigations serve as a stark reminder that trench work can be highly hazardous and the importance of maintaining stringent safety protocols when working within excavations. The incident is a tragic indication that several hazards are present when working in excavations, including unstable soil, weather conditions, and the weight of equipment, to mention a few.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, the loss of a young man’s life is a tragedy that cannot be undone. The investigations and findings will aim to prevent a recurrence of a similar tragedy. Going forward, it is essential to ensure that safety protocols and measures are continuously developed and implemented, and all parties concerned remain vigilant to prevent accidents or incidents in trench work.
