The Final Mission? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
New Missions and Updates
As the autumn approaches, Activision has unveiled the latest installment in the Call of Duty series: Modern Warfare III. Serving as a direct sequel to last year’s Modern Warfare II reboot, the game is expected to be the grand finale in the trilogy of hugely successful Modern Warfare titles from the early 2010s. Developed by Sledgehammer Games, in collaboration with series originator Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare III promises intense battles and new gameplay features.
The Campaign mode will introduce Open Combat Missions, providing players with multiple routes and options to suit their preferred play styles. The game’s central protagonist, the mustachioed hero John Price, and his Task Force 141 will once again face off against their long-running nemesis Vladimir Makarov, the personification of Russian ultra-nationalism.
In multiplayer, Modern Warfare III will offer an updated version of the original 16 maps from 2009’s Modern Warfare II, along with four larger battle maps for the Ground War and Invasion modes. Additionally, a new 3v3v3 mode known as Cutthroat will be introduced, allowing players to engage in intense skirmishes. Weapon customization options have also been expanded, and a special movement mechanic called Tac Stance has been added to enhance tactical close-quarters combat.
Zombies Survival Mode
Fans of the popular Zombies survival mode will be delighted to know that it will be making a return in Modern Warfare III. Developed by Treyarch, the side-game will offer its biggest open-world map ever, providing players with new challenges and opportunities to fend off hordes of undead creatures and larger monsters. To increase the intensity, squads of players will be able to team up and face these enemies together.
Continued Success and Regulatory Concerns
The Call of Duty series has been a commercial juggernaut, with Modern Warfare II achieving the status of the fastest-selling title in the series, surpassing $1 billion in revenue in just 10 days. With the release of its highly anticipated sequel, the industry eagerly awaits the game’s reception, while also keeping an eye on Microsoft’s ongoing attempts to acquire Activision Blizzard, despite resistance from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority.
The fate of the Call of Duty series on non-Microsoft-owned platforms has been a concern for market regulators, who are mindful of maintaining competition in the gaming industry. The success and continued availability of the franchise on various platforms outside of the Microsoft ecosystem is seen as essential for maintaining a healthy market.
A Last Adventure for John Price
For fans of the Call of Duty series, Modern Warfare III represents potentially the last journey for John Price and his comrades. As they gear up for one final mission, players can also look forward to a fresh set of online maps to conquer in multiplayer battles. Whether it is bidding farewell to a beloved character or immersing oneself in the intense action, Activision’s upcoming release promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for gamers worldwide.
