Roland-Garros: Elina Svitolina Advances to Quarterfinals with Impressive Victory over Daria Kasatkina
Overview
Elina Svitolina, a Ukrainian tennis player, advanced to the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros by beating Daria Kasatkina, her opponent in the fourth round. Svitolina won in straight sets, 6-4 and 7-6(5), in a hard-fought match in which she showed tremendous poise and determination.
Kasatkina entered the match as the ninth seed and semifinalist at last year’s Roland Garros tournament. She put up a strong effort, but ultimately fell to Svitolina and the Ukrainian’s outstanding recent form on clay.
The Match
Svitolina started strong, picking up two breaks of serve in the first five games to lead 4-1. Kasatkina broke back for 4-2, but the pair swapped service games for the remainder of the first set, with Svitolina serving out the set inside 46 minutes.
The second set was a far closer affair. Kasatkina made a solid start, converting her first service game before breaking Svitolina’s to go 2-0 up. Svitolina, however, kept her cool, breaking back before holding her own serve to square the set.
The pair traded breaks again in the next two games, leaving the set level at 3-3. Another break had Kasatkina trailing, and as each held their next service game, Svitolina was 5-4 up and had the chance to serve for the match.
The Ukrainian even reached match point in that game, but Kasatkina rallied and broke serve to make it 5-5. Svitolina broke serve again to move into a 6-5 lead, but dropped her next serve to take the match into a tie-break.
The Ukrainian looked in control as she took a 3-1 lead, but a slight wobble saw Kasatkina fight back to level the score at 4-4 and 5-5. Fitting the theme of the match, Svitolina claimed victory via a point won on Kasatkina’s serve.
Post-Match Reaction
Following the match, Svitolina expressed her delight at matching her personal best at Roland-Garros on her return to Grand Slam tennis. She said, “I wouldn’t have dreamed about this when I was giving birth in October last year. This is unbelievable for me to compete here, going all the way to the quarterfinals is a special feeling, and I’m motivated to give everything for the next matches.”
The Ukrainian also praised the crowd, stating that it was an unforgettable atmosphere: “Now I can feel what Gael [Monfils] experienced all these years. I’m so thankful for the French support.”
In the quarterfinals, Svitolina will face Aryna Sabalenka, a former top-ten player currently ranked 13th in the world.
Conclusion
Svitolina’s win over Kasatkina demonstrates her impressive form on clay and her resilience in challenging situations during the match. The Ukrainian tennis player will need all of her skills and determination as she moves on to the next stage of the competition against Sabalenka, who will likely prove to be a tough opponent.
As the tournament progresses, fans and critics alike will undoubtedly be watching Svitolina closely, eager to see if she can continue her impressive run and perhaps even win the Roland-Garros tournament.
