Edmonton Elks Pay Tribute to Christian Saulsberry in 2023 Season Opener
The Edmonton Elks are set to kick off their 2023 Canadian Football League (CFL) season at Commonwealth Stadium on Sunday, June 11th. However, before the start of the game, the Elks are taking the time to pay tribute to the late Christian Saulsberry, who tragically passed away last December at the young age of 25. Saulsberry was a rookie with the Elks in 2022, and during his short time with the team, he left an impact that will always be remembered.
A Dedicated Tribute to a Memorable Player
Christian Saulsberry was an exceptional talent in the CFL, with a unique talent for returning kicks and punts. In his debut season with the Edmonton Elks, he played eight games and racked up nearly 1,000 yards through his returns. His punt return average was the highest of any Edmonton player with at least 15 punt returns over the past 25 years. Saulsberry‘s talents earned him a nomination for the Elks Fan Awards’ Fan Favourite category, which he won, thanks to the overwhelming support of the team’s fans.
Despite his short time with the team, Saulsberry‘s character and spirit had a lasting impact on the Elks players and coaching staff. His teammate and fellow Memphis native Dillon Mitchell stated that “playing for Christian (Saulsberry) is my biggest thing this year,” expressing the team’s commitment to celebrating Saulsberry‘s life and memory. Running back coach Jordan Linnen described him as an unforgettable player who always lit up the room and kept everyone’s spirits and morale up.
The Elks Brotherhood’s Dedication to Saulsberry
To honour Saulsberry‘s legacy and contributions to the team, the Edmonton Elks are dedicating their 2023 season to him. All the players will wear special memorial decals on their helmets bearing his jersey number, 25, which has also been painted in both endzones of the stadium for the game. This team-wide dedication and tribute serve to show the players’ fond memories of Christian Saulsberry and the positive energy he always brought to the team.
Kevin Brown, Elks’ running back and Saulsberry‘s roommate, expressed his admiration and love for the late player. He called Saulsberry “Tadpole” or “Waterbug” and stated that Saulsberry‘s spirit would be watching over them and that they are determined to make Saulsberry proud by winning the Grey Cup. This sentiment is the primary motivation for the Elks’ players, who are dedicating their season to Saulsberry‘s memory and legacy.
Conclusion: Honouring a Life Cut Short
In the world of sports, players come and go, but few leave a lasting impact like Christian Saulsberry. The Edmonton Elks community and fans will always remember his infectious smile, high spirits, and exceptional performance on the field. The dedications, ceremonies, and tributes show that Saulsberry remains in everyone’s hearts and minds, inspiring and motivating the team to win and honour his memory. His legacy will continue beyond this season, and his spirit will forever be a part of the Elks’ brotherhood.
