Below Deck Down Under Recap: Bye Bye Bye

By Jihane Bousfiha

This episode of Below Deck Down Under is undeniably heavy and upsetting. It delves into some serious crew-related situations, including two instances of attempted sexual assault. The events that unfold in this episode are bone-chilling and require careful analysis. Let’s break down the second half of this week’s dark double-header.

A Disturbing Revelation

The episode begins where the last one left off, with Luke retreating to his room after being caught climbing into Margot’s bed while she was asleep. Laura checks in on him, and he insists he did nothing wrong, not understanding why the producers intervened. Meanwhile, Aesha checks on Margot and discovers that she did not give her consent to Luke. This revelation sets the stage for the disturbing events that follow.

Laura joins Harry, Tzarina, Culver, and Adam in the jacuzzi and once again crosses boundaries with Adam. Despite his repeated refusals and frustrations, Laura continues to touch him inappropriately. Later, she follows Adam to his bunk, where she climbs into his bed, applies lotion to his back, and tries to give him a massage against his will. The producers intervene, but Laura persists in her attempts to kiss and massage him until she is finally forced to leave. The sheer audacity of her actions, especially occurring moments after Luke’s assault attempt on Margot, is truly stomach-turning. My heart goes out to Adam, and it is disheartening to see him hesitant to speak out due to the fear of making things awkward or causing Laura to lose her job.

A Strong Support System

Aesha, visibly shaken and in tears, wakes up Captain Jason and relays the Luke situation to him. Captain Jason quickly takes action, ensuring Margot’s safety and making the decision to fire Luke. Aesha also opens up about her own experience with sexual assault trauma, empathizing with Margot’s ordeal. Captain Jason’s swift response and his emphasis on consent and respect among the crew are commendable.

Margot confides in Laura about Luke’s actions, only to be met with insensitivity and victim-blaming. Laura’s response reveals her true character, lacking empathy for Margot and showing unwavering support for Luke. It is heartbreaking to witness Margot blame herself for being “drunk” and “flirty,” as Tzarina reminds her that women should be allowed to have a good time without fear of harm. Thankfully, Margot has a supportive group of colleagues in Aesha, Tzarina, and others, who help her process the traumatic experience.

A Toxic Work Environment

Laura’s disturbing behavior doesn’t stop there. Aesha notices Laura’s intense actions towards Adam and urges him to speak up if anything is wrong. Adam confesses that he should have been more firm with Laura, but he realizes that informing Captain Jason about the toxic work environment Laura is creating is the best course of action.

Meanwhile, without a bosun for the day, Culver struggles to lead the deck crew effectively. Both Harry and Adam express concerns about Culver’s lack of initiative, fearing that their performance may suffer as a result. It becomes apparent that Culver’s strength lies in entertaining guests, rather than managing a crew.

An Inexcusable Lack of Empathy

Throughout the episode, Laura’s comments become increasingly abhorrent. She dismisses Luke’s firing as unnecessary and even suggests that he should have been given a second chance, hiding behind the excuse that he meant his actions as a joke. She also implies that Margot didn’t refuse Luke’s advances and that he felt welcome in her cabin. Margot had clearly expressed her desire to sleep, and Luke’s behavior was completely unacceptable.

Laura’s lack of empathy for Margot and her unwavering support for Luke highlight her true nature. In the laundry room, Margot shares Laura’s inappropriate comments with Aesha, who quickly informs Captain Jason. Aesha further reveals Laura’s unwanted pursuit of Adam, which Adam corroborates. Captain Jason calls Laura to the bridge and reprimands her for her insensitivity towards Margot. Laura denies any wrongdoing, claiming that she was simply checking in on Margot. Ultimately, Captain Jason makes the decision to fire Laura, a decision that is met with collective relief. Finally, we are free from their presence.

A Test of Leadership

It is crucial to acknowledge Captain Jason and Aesha’s commendable actions during this difficult episode. Aesha proves to be a genuine and kind-hearted soul, showing unwavering support for Margot and Adam. Captain Jason not only listens to his crew’s concerns and experiences but also takes immediate action to ensure their well-being. He fires both Luke and Laura without hesitation, putting the safety and respect of his team first.

Conclusion

This week’s episode of Below Deck Down Under leaves a lasting impact. It highlights the importance of consent, respect, and support within a work environment. Margot’s story serves as a poignant reminder that victims should never blame themselves, and those who perpetrate such acts must be held accountable. We can only hope that the crew finds solace and healing in the aftermath of such traumatic events.

As the mid-season preview reveals additional twists and turns, including the arrival of João from Below Deck Mediterranean, we are left to ponder the decision to replace Luke with another potentially problematic crew member. The showrunners certainly have taken a bold choice. Only time will tell how this decision plays out in future episodes.
