Casper Ruud Returns to Roland Garros Finals by Outplaying Alexander Zverev
Match Report
Norwegian tennis player Casper Ruud delivered a flawless performance to reach the Roland Garros final tournament, his third appearance in five Grand Slam events. The 24-year-old defeated Alexander Zverev from Germany 6-3, 6-4, and 6-0 in the semi-finals held on Friday. Ruud, who was a finalist in Paris last year and the US Open in 2022, crushed Zverev with clean baseline hitting throughout the two-hour nine-minute match on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The Norwegian will face Novak Djokovic in the championship match on Sunday, bidding for his maiden major title.
Ruud outperformed Zverev
Casper Ruud secured six of his ten break points to book his spot in Sunday’s championship match. The Norwegian lifted his 10th ATP Tour title in Estoril in April and reached an ATP Masters 1000 semi-final in Rome in May. Ruud arrived at the Roland Garros tournament with a modest 16-11 record in 2023 but showed recent signs of his enviable form. He has dropped just two sets en route to his third major final.
Ruud on his strategy and performance
In his on-court interview, Ruud said, “Honestly, I just went out there and tried to play without too many feelings, without thinking too much. If it’s towards the end of the tournament, everyone here playing today has done well anyway. So I tried to play without pressure, without thinking too much, and not to play with too much emotion, if that makes sense. Today just went really well.”
Ruud’s relentlessness made his opponent play, and he made only 19 unforced errors across the three sets, compared to Zverev’s 37. His rocket forehand was the key weapon behind his final tally of 25 winners.
Zverev’s Struggle
Zverev, the 22nd seed, dropped his opening service game of the match, but quickly responded with a break of his own in the third game for 1-2. However, that was as good as it got for the German, who could not break his opponent’s serve again. Ruud secured another break in the next game and was effective at blunting Zverev’s booming delivery.
The fourth seed raced to victory from there as Zverev struggled to keep up with him, winning the third set without facing a break point to complete his triumph. After the match, Zverev expressed his disappointment, saying, “I played very, very much below average. That’s how it goes.”
Editorial and Advice
Casper Ruud is set to face the world number one and two-time champion Novak Djokovic in the Roland Garros final tournament. Djokovic defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz to secure his place in the tournament’s finals. It will be a challenging match for Ruud, who will have to seek for any weaknesses in Djokovic’s performance and prevail. To do so, Ruud must maintain concentration and be tactically astute throughout the match.
Moreover, Ruud’s success has revived the debate surrounding “the natural talent versus hard work” philosophy in sports. Talent, in general, is not enough to excel in any profession or sport. It requires dedication, discipline, and many hours of practice to refine and perfect one’s talent. Therefore, it is essential to realize that hard work and consistent practice can unlock one’s natural abilities and enable them to reach incredible heights.
