Preteen Rebecca Wu Wins 2021 Doodle for Google Competition

Bellevue, Washington middle schooler Rebecca Wu has been declared the winner of this year’s Doodle for Google contest. The theme for this year’s competition was “I am grateful for…” Wu chose to dedicate her artistic creativity to her family, particularly her sisters Anna and Esther.

Wu’s Gratitude for Her Sisters

Wu’s design, titled “My Sweetest Memories,” depicts the three sisters lying on a bed of flowers, surrounded by steamy cups of hot chocolate and garden flowers. The word “Google” is woven into the floral motif formed by a collection of vibrant flowers and vines.

“Sometimes I love them, and sometimes I dislike them very much, but I can’t imagine my life without my sisters,” Wu wrote. “I have learned to be a little bit more patient with them, and they have had an enormous impact on me. We help to inspire each other and to help each other grow like the vines and flowers in my picture.

“In this drawing, we are having a fun time drinking hot chocolate, which is one of my fondest memories. The rainbow in the background symbolizes the first thing I helped one of my sisters draw. In one of my family pictures, my sisters (sitting next to me) and I (the one in the middle) are sitting in flowers with a background that I drew, so I thought it would be fun to reference.”

Wu Beats Thousands to Win Grand Prize

Wu’s artwork was pitted against thousands of entries, eventually winning the hearts of the judges over. She received a prize of $30,000 in college scholarship money and $50,000 in technology grant, as well as having her artwork featured on the Google homepage.

“It’s really cool. It’s kind of unbelievable because it’s such a big thing,” Wu told GeekWire. “I think it’s just really nice.”

Editorial and Advice

It is remarkable that Rebecca Wu was able to depict gratitude for her sisters with such color and vivacity. Creativity is an essential skill for students to have, and it is exciting to see how much fun they can have with contests like Doodle for Google.

It is critical that learners are provided with an environment that encourages and fosters creativity. By inspiring learners to create stories, draw pictures, and come up with innovative ideas, teachers can help their students think outside the box and gain essential skills.

Congratulations, Rebecca Wu, and all the other contestants!
