Economy, Law & Politics: Canada‘s population to surpass 40M people
An Exciting Milestone for Canada
In a historic moment, Canada‘s population is projected to exceed 40 million people on June 16, 2023. This milestone serves as a testament to the country’s dynamic and welcoming nature. Statistics Canada‘s chief statistician, Anil Arora, expressed excitement and highlighted the potential that this achievement represents for the nation.
Canada‘s population has gone through significant changes in recent decades. While large waves of immigrants have come to the country throughout the 20th century, it wasn’t until 2021 that the record of more than 400,000 immigrants in 1913 was broken. The following year marked the first time in Canada‘s history when the population grew by over a million people in a 12-month period, with a growth rate of 2.7 percent.
Today, almost all of Canada‘s population growth stems from immigrants, with 95.9 percent of demographic growth in 2022 attributed to new arrivals. This places Canada‘s population growth among the top 20 in the world. If this growth rate remains consistent, the Canadian population could double in approximately 26 years.
The Benefits and Challenges of Growing Population
The government’s plan to increase immigration is expected to address the country’s labor market needs and mitigate the effects of an aging population. Suzanne Huot, an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, emphasizes the importance of immigration for Canada‘s progress. However, Huot also acknowledges that a growing population brings its own set of challenges.
One of the significant challenges Canada faces is the issue of housing affordability. Public transit and social infrastructure must also expand to accommodate the rising population. Insufficient investment in these areas can lead to social isolation and hinder the well-being of communities. Thomas Davidoff, an associate professor at UBC’s Sauder School of Business, stresses that addressing the housing problem is crucial to prevent the scapegoating of immigrants, as seen in certain parts of the United States.
The Significance of Immigration and Open Borders
In addition to economic benefits, Suzanne Huot believes that Canada plays a crucial role in providing refuge for those displaced by war or environmental disasters. As global problems persist, Canada must not turn away but instead keep its borders open to those seeking safety and a better life. Huot urges society not to fall victim to scare tactics and to recognize the importance of maintaining a compassionate and welcoming stance.
The Way Forward
As Canada‘s population continues to grow, it is imperative that the government and policymakers address the challenges associated with this growth. Investing in affordable housing and improving social infrastructure, including public transit, should be top priorities. Additionally, measures to support income for those who cannot afford housing are crucial in ensuring an inclusive and equitable society.
Canada‘s success as a welcoming and diverse nation hinges on its ability to effectively manage its growing population. By embracing immigration, investing in social infrastructure, and combating housing affordability issues, Canada can continue to thrive, setting an example for the world.
