Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon Accused of Creating a Toxic Work Environment
Accusations of Toxic Behavior
Jimmy Fallon, the host of the popular Tonight Show, is facing accusations of toxic behavior by about fifteen employees. Rolling Stone magazine published an investigation on Thursday detailing allegations of intimidation, lack of respect, behaviors suggesting that Fallon was sometimes under the influence of substances while at work, and the erratic nature of the star host. The atmosphere on the Tonight Show set seems far from this description when watching the show, where laughter and humor seem to be the order of the day. However, sixteen people (fourteen former employees and two current witnesses working for the Tonight Show) described, under the condition of anonymity, Jimmy Fallon’s behaviors that have allegedly created an unhealthy and unprofessional work environment. Seven of them disclosed that they sought psychological help as a result of their time on the show’s team, and three others even said they had suicidal thoughts. Several employees expressed their concerns to human resources, but they believe that the problems on the Tonight Show set persisted. NBC, which broadcasts the show, defended the Tonight Show in a statement without ever mentioning Jimmy Fallon. “Providing a respectful work environment is a priority,” wrote a representative to Rolling Stone, which contacted a total of 80 employees for their investigation. Jimmy Fallon has not publicly responded to the article’s publication.
“Nobody Says No to Jimmy”
Jimmy Fallon is known and loved for his endearing character, candor, and charisma on screen. Since taking over the show from Jay Leno in 2014, his show began with an audience of 11.3 million people. On average, each episode is viewed by 3 to 4 million people, and the Tonight Show has generated many viral television moments in popular culture. However, it seems that the host has “good days” and “bad days” behind the scenes. When he is in a bad mood or dissatisfied with his colleagues’ work, Jimmy Fallon puts everyone on edge to avoid triggering his temper. “Nobody says no to Jimmy,” explained a former employee to Rolling Stone. “We never knew which Jimmy we would get and when he would have a tantrum. Look at how many showrunners have left the show.” Jimmy Fallon would have yelled at his employees on numerous occasions. Three of them recounted being scolded by the host in front of their colleagues. Writers, responsible for writing jokes or segments for the show, received notes that personally attacked them when the host was not satisfied with their work. “Pathetic. What’s your problem? You’ve outdone yourself,” he allegedly wrote to an employee in a note that Rolling Stone was able to review. Jimmy Fallon, who has been the subject of rumors in recent years alleging that he has problems with alcohol, would have shown up to work intoxicated or hungover on a few occasions, according to testimonies.
Seinfeld Defends Fallon
During a segment of the Tonight Show with comedian Jerry Seinfeld, a member of the team, responsible for the host’s cue cards, was allegedly scolded during filming. Seinfeld then suggested that Fallon apologize, which he reportedly did. Jerry Seinfeld, notably known for the 1990s show that bears his name, shared his version of the events with Rolling Stone. “It’s so stupid. I remember that moment very well… I teased Jimmy about a mistake, and we all laughed about the fact that Jimmy is rarely ever flustered. It wasn’t uncomfortable at all. Jimmy and I still talk about it occasionally and laugh. It’s a stupid distortion of events.” The Rolling Stone investigation also delves into the accusations made against one of the former showrunners of the Tonight Show, Jamie Granet-Bederman, who also allegedly intimidated employees. She left the show in 2022.
Conclusion
The allegations against Jimmy Fallon and the claims of a toxic work environment on the Tonight Show set are troubling. It is crucial for employers to ensure a respectful and professional atmosphere for their employees. The well-being and mental health of workers should be a top priority, and it is imperative that any issues or concerns are properly addressed and resolved. Organizations must have effective channels for employees to report misconduct, and management should take appropriate action to prevent and rectify any toxic behavior. It remains to be seen how these allegations will impact Jimmy Fallon’s career and the reputation of the Tonight Show.
