The Teachers’ Village: A Testament to the Commitment to Education
A Celebration of Teaching on Teachers’ Day
Teachers’ Day, celebrated on September 5, is a significant occasion dedicated to honoring Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s first Vice President and former President, who was not only a philosopher and distinguished scholar but also the recipient of the prestigious Bharat Ratna award. On this special day, it is fitting to explore an interesting village in Karnataka, where nearly every household has a teacher, highlighting the deep-rooted commitment to education and the importance placed on this noble profession.
The Village of Inchal: A Beacon of Education
Situated in the Savadatti taluk of Belagavi, approximately 41 km from the district centre, Inchal is known as the Teachers’ Village. With a population of around 6,000 residents, this village proudly claims around 600 individuals engaged in the teaching profession. These dedicated teachers serve in various parts of the state, with many working in state-run aided schools and colleges, while others are affiliated with private educational institutions throughout Karnataka.
Teaching: The Most Honorable Profession in Inchal
In Inchal, teaching is regarded as the most honorable profession, and this sentiment is evident in the remarkable prevalence of teachers among its residents. One remarkable example is Shabbir Mirajannavar, the secretary of the Karnataka State Primary Teachers Association in Bailhongal taluk, whose family includes 13 members who are all teachers. On average, families in the village have at least five members engaged in the teaching profession. Additionally, it is worth noting that agriculture serves as a secondary occupation for the villagers, further emphasizing their deep commitment to education.
The Influence of Shivanand Bharati Swamiji
This extraordinary prevalence of teachers in Inchal can be attributed to the vision and efforts of Shivanand Bharati Swamiji. In the 1970s, the village had only eight teachers and a single primary school. This situation posed significant challenges for students, especially girls, who had to travel to Bailhongal town for higher education opportunities. To address this need, Shivanand Bharati Swamiji, along with other teachers, established an educational society that brought higher learning to the village.
In 1982, they took a momentous step by establishing a degree college in the village. Additionally, in 1984, the Rural Teachers’ Training Centre was established, offering free training and meals to village students interested in pursuing a career in teaching. These dedicated efforts bore fruit as the literacy rate of the village improved, and many students from Inchal pursued teacher training.
Since 1988, more than 20 teachers have been selected for training each year, resulting in the village boasting a primary school, a high school, a PU college, a degree college offering courses in commerce, arts, and science, a college dedicated to Ayurveda, and a Sanskrit School.
A Testament to the Enduring Commitment to Education
The transformation of Inchal into the Teachers’ Village is a testament to the unwavering commitment of its residents towards education. Through their tireless efforts and the guidance of Shivanand Bharati Swamiji, this village has become a shining example of the profound impact that education can have on a community. As we celebrate Teachers’ Day, we can draw inspiration from Inchal and the dedicated teachers who shape the minds and futures of countless students. Their unwavering commitment to education sets a remarkable example and reminds us of the transformative power of teaching.
Inchly, and the countless other villages and communities across the world where education holds such importance, serve as beacons of hope and progress. Their dedication to education serves as a reminder for governments, policymakers, and individuals alike to prioritize investments in education, providing opportunities for all students to flourish and ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
