Bedard draws comparisons to NHL superstar Connor McDavid at Scouting Combine
At the recent NHL Scouting Combine, all eyes were on 15-year-old phenom Connor Bedard. The underage player from Canada has drawn comparisons to NHL superstar Connor McDavid, and many scouts and analysts believe that Bedard has the potential to become a generational talent in the NHL.
McDavid Comparison
It’s not hard to see why Bedard is drawing comparisons to McDavid. Like McDavid, Bedard possesses a rare combination of speed, skill, and hockey IQ. Bedard is a natural center who can play in all situations, and he possesses a lethal shot and excellent playmaking abilities.
Furthermore, both players were granted “exceptional player” status in their respective junior leagues. McDavid was granted the status in 2012 and Bedard was granted the status in 2020. This allowed them both to enter their respective leagues at the age of 15 instead of the usual age of 16.
Potential
The hype surrounding Bedard is not unwarranted. In his rookie season in the Western Hockey League (WHL), Bedard recorded 28 goals and 40 assists in just 15 games. He was named the WHL’s Rookie of the Year and was also named the tournament’s best forward at the U18 World Championships, despite playing against players who were two years older than him.
Given his performance and potential, many scouts believe Bedard could be the first overall pick in the NHL draft when he becomes eligible in 2023. But for now, Bedard remains focused on improving his game and learning from NHL pros like McDavid.
Advice for Bedard
It’s clear that Bedard has the talent and potential to become an NHL superstar. But with that comes a tremendous amount of pressure, expectations, and scrutiny. To help him navigate through this, Bedard should focus on his development and not get too caught up in the hype surrounding him.
He should also draw inspiration from players like McDavid, who have gone through similar experiences. Lastly, Bedard should surround himself with positive influences, like his family, coaches, and teammates, who can help him stay grounded, motivated, and focused on his goals.
