Why does the Powerball jackpot increase over time—and what was the largest payout in history?
The Current Powerball Jackpot
The Powerball jackpot has reached a staggering $1 billion after the latest drawing on Monday night. This historic amount is the third-largest ultimate Powerball prize in history, and the seventh-largest ever seen in the United States. The next drawing will take place on Wednesday night and will be broadcast live from the Florida Lottery studio.
How Does the Powerball Jackpot Increase Over Time?
The Powerball jackpot increases over time due to a simple mechanism: the number of buy-ins ahead of each drawing. The more Powerball tickets that are purchased nationwide, the higher the prize fund becomes. Each time a drawing happens without a winner, the jackpot rolls over into the next round and grows as more people buy Powerball tickets.
There are nine ways to win money by playing Powerball, and although a player has yet to take home the jackpot in full, some ticket holders have received smaller prizes throughout this historic jackpot run. In the most recent drawing, more than 2.8 million tickets qualified for lower-tier financial prizes.
Larger Jackpots Are Engineered by the Lotteries
Enormous lottery jackpots, like the Powerball and Mega Millions, have become more common in recent years. According to Victor Matheson, an economics professor at the College of the Holy Cross, these larger jackpots are not coincidental but rather engineered by the lotteries themselves. The Multi-State Lottery Association, a non-profit organization that manages the Powerball and Mega Millions lotteries, intentionally designs the games to generate larger sums of money.
The actual amount of money in the jackpot, known as the “cash value,” comes from a portion of Powerball ticket sales. However, the annuitized option offered by Powerball allows the lottery to advertise the jackpot as the total amount that a winner would receive, before taxes, if they chose to receive their prize in annual installments over 30 years. This total amount includes the actual cash value plus interest over that 30-year period.
The Largest Powerball Jackpots Ever Won
The largest Powerball jackpot ever won went to a California ticket holder who won a staggering $2.04 billion prize in November of last year. Before that, three winners from California, Florida, and Tennessee won a $1.586 billion prize in 2016. Other significant jackpots include $768.4 million in 2019, won by a ticket purchased in Wisconsin, and $758.7 million in 2017, won by someone in Massachusetts.
Taxation of Powerball Payouts
Powerball payouts are subject to federal and jurisdictional income taxes. Whether a winner chooses to receive their prize as a lump-sum payment or through annuities, taxes will apply. The federal government withholds 24% of a winner’s lottery prize if it exceeds $5,000, and additional state taxes may also be deducted depending on the winner’s residence. Some states, including California, Delaware, Florida, Tennessee, and Texas, do not impose an additional tax on lottery winnings.
For example, New York withholds almost 9% of the winnings, making it the state with the highest tax rate on gambling or lottery prizes in the country.
Conclusion
The Powerball jackpot has reached a historic $1 billion, driven by the number of people buying Powerball tickets. Lottery officials estimate the prize fund to have a cash value of $516.8 million. These record-breaking jackpots are intentionally designed by lottery organizations to generate larger sums of money. While the odds of winning the jackpot are slim, many individuals continue to test their luck in the hope of striking it rich. However, winners should also be aware of the taxation implications that come with receiving a large prize.
