Red Wings Acquire Kailer Yamamoto & Klim Kostin From Oilers
June 29, 2023 by Michael DeRosa
The Detroit Red Wings have made a notable move to improve their forward depth by acquiring Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin from the Edmonton Oilers. In exchange, the Oilers will receive future considerations. This trade comes as no surprise for Yamamoto, as he had been on the trading block for some time with his $3.1 million cap hit. However, Kostin‘s inclusion in the deal is a surprising move by the Oilers.
Red Wings Improve Forward Depth By Adding Yamamoto & Kostin
Yamamoto, a 2017 first-round pick, is only 24 years old and has shown potential as a top-six forward. The Red Wings, with their strong development system, seem like a good fit for him to rejuvenate his career. In the 2022-23 season, he contributed 10 goals and 25 points in 58 games played for the Oilers. Although his performance in the postseason was not exceptional, a fresh start with the Red Wings could provide the necessary environment for him to thrive.
On the other hand, Kostin, also a 2017 first-round pick, struggled to establish himself as an everyday player with the St. Louis Blues. However, he found success with the Oilers in a bottom-six role, showcasing his ability to provide secondary scoring and make a physical impact on the game. In 57 games played, he recorded 11 goals, 21 points, 157 hits, and a plus-12 rating.
Yamamoto & Kostin‘s Fits With the Red Wings
Yamamoto is expected to slot into the Red Wings’ top six, adding depth to their right wing position. His playmaking ability and offensive IQ make him a valuable asset on the power play. Kostin, on the other hand, should find a role on the team’s third line, where he has proven his ability to produce in a bottom-six role. He could also contribute on the power play with his net-front presence and potentially earn penalty-kill responsibilities.
The addition of Yamamoto and Kostin should provide a significant boost to the Red Wings’ middle six, strengthening their forward depth and adding scoring options in various roles.
Oilers Gain Cap Space
Moving Yamamoto was a crucial step for the Oilers, who aimed to free up cap space to make additional roster additions. Reports suggest that they are now focused on acquiring an affordable top-six forward and a top-four defenseman. By trading Yamamoto‘s contract, they create the financial flexibility needed to pursue these targets.
As for Kostin, he is a restricted free agent due for a raise after his breakout season. Considering the Oilers’ current cap situation, it would have been challenging to accommodate his salary demands. General Manager Ken Holland’s decision to part ways with Kostin is understandable given the team’s financial constraints.
Overall, this trade benefits both teams as they prepare for the upcoming 2023-24 season. It will be intriguing to see how Yamamoto and Kostin perform with the Red Wings moving forward.
