Broncos Notebook: HC Sean Payton, Broncos still searching for improvement after win over Packers
Reflections on the Win
In the aftermath of the Denver Broncos‘ nail-biting 19-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers, head coach Sean Payton emphasized the pursuit of perfectionism in his coaching philosophy. Despite securing their first win at Empower Field at Mile High, Payton acknowledged that there were areas in which the team could have executed better. Complacency is not an option for Payton, who believes in constantly striving for improvement and perfecting the game.
Payton admitted that he “wears his emotions on his sleeve,” whether it be on the defensive or offensive side of the game. The Broncos started strong with a 16-3 lead, but consecutive Green Bay touchdowns allowed the Packers to take a late 17-16 advantage. Payton’s focus on perfectionism led him to dwell on the “what-if” scenarios, particularly on plays that did not yield the desired outcome.
One such play that Payton used as an example was an incomplete pass to the flat where quarterback Russell Wilson couldn’t connect with running back Javonte Williams. The context of the play, being second-and-5 from the Green Bay 44 with 4:40 left in regulation, made the incompletion even more significant. A completed pass would have led to a first down, moving the Broncos closer to the end zone and taking more time off the clock. Instead, Denver had to rely on kicker Wil Lutz’s 52-yard field goal and a defensive stop to secure the win.
Payton’s attention to detail extends beyond the offensive side of the game. He reflected on his attempts to find the perfect balance between the run and passing game, especially on crucial third downs. Despite rushing for a season-high 145 yards, Payton acknowledged that he ran the ball too many times on third down, resulting in punts. He emphasized the importance of staying on schedule and managing the game effectively.
Continued Growth on Defense
Inside linebacker Josey Jewell also adopted Payton’s mindset of continued growth and improvement. Jewell acknowledged the challenges of transitioning to a new defensive system but expressed confidence in the team’s progress. Building trust and improving communication among the defensive players have been crucial factors in the Broncos‘ recent success. Jewell hopes to carry this momentum forward and continue to develop as they face the Kansas City Chiefs.
Payton Encouraged by Offense’s Performance in High-Pressure Situations
The Broncos‘ offense demonstrated resiliency and composure in high-pressure situations during their victory over the Packers. Payton credited their success to preparation and the ability to seize opportunities when they arise. He emphasized that while these situations may not occur frequently, it is essential to be prepared for them when they do.
One crucial instance was at the end of the first half when the Broncos capitalized on a missed field goal by the Packers. They quickly moved down the field, with wide receiver Jerry Jeudy making a crucial 17-yard reception and quarterback Russell Wilson executing a 21-yard run. This drive set up kicker Wil Lutz for a 35-yard field goal, which proved vital in the final scoreline.
In the closing moments of the game, with a slim 19-17 lead and 1:37 remaining, Payton made strategic decisions to run the ball on three consecutive plays and run down the clock to six seconds. On fourth-and-9 from their own 27, Wilson launched a pass downfield that allowed the clock to expire before the ball hit the ground. Payton defended this strategy, explaining that science informed them that running it down to six seconds gave them a better chance of ending the game without having to punt and risking a blocked punt.
Promising Path Ahead
The Broncos‘ commitment to preparation and executing in high-pressure situations has led them to favorable outcomes. With their upcoming matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, the ability to handle late-game scenarios may prove crucial once again. Payton reiterated the importance of every detail, emphasizing that players understand the significance and impact of these situations.
As the season progresses, the Broncos will be aiming to further refine their performances and strive for a more perfect game. Payton’s pursuit of perfectionism and dedication to continuous improvement provide a promising path for the team. The Broncos‘ ability to capitalize on these small nuances could be a deciding factor in their future success. It remains to be seen whether they can maintain their momentum and push further towards their goals.
