The 171st Rockton World’s Fair: A Thanksgiving Tradition since 1852

October 6, 2023

The 171st Rockton World’s Fair is set to take place from October 6 to 9, marking a Thanksgiving weekend tradition that has been celebrated since 1852. After two years of cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fair is finally back in full swing, much to the delight of its organizers and attendees.

A Full Return: Recapturing the Spirit of Tradition

Sandra Solonik, the president of the Rockton Agricultural Society, expressed her joy at being able to bring back the fair in its truest form. The theme for this year’s event is aptly named “Back in Fair Style,” symbolizing the return to the fair’s long-standing traditions and activities.

One of the highlights of this year’s fair is the reintroduction of the pie-eating contest and baby show, both of which have been part of the event for an impressive 171 years. According to Solonik, these cherished traditions are a testament to the fair’s enduring legacy.

A Record-Breaking Year

This year’s Rockton World’s Fair boasts an impressive number of exhibits, with over 5,000 agricultural and home-craft displays. The exhibits cover a wide range of categories, including baking, preserves, crops, vegetables, art, crafts, photography, and even school entries.

In addition to the multitude of exhibits, the fair will also feature horse shows and livestock shows, offering visitors a chance to witness the beauty of animals such as alpacas, goats, sheep, and an array of poultry and rabbits in the newly reinstated poultry barn. The fair will also have its beloved midway and demolition derby, ensuring that attendees of all ages are entertained throughout the weekend.

Entertainment for All

The Rockton World’s Fair is not just about exhibits and shows. It also offers a variety of entertainment options for visitors. This year, fairgoers can enjoy three stages of live performances by talented artists such as Ty Baynton, Hayley Verrall, Fiddlestix, and Darren Hancock. The lineup promises to offer something for everyone.

Eager Anticipation

Prior to the pandemic, the Rockton World’s Fair attracted over 60,000 visitors, and in 2022, more than 40,000 people attended, even with the scaled-down version. This year, organizers hope to see between 50,000 to 60,000 attendees, particularly with the good weather forecast.

Solonik expressed her excitement and anticipation, stating, “We hope people get out and enjoy it. We’re looking forward to welcoming everybody.”

Event Details

The Rockton World’s Fair will open its gates on Friday, October 6, at 4:00 p.m. The fair will officially kick off at 7:00 p.m. with a parade featuring the heavy horse team, followed by the demolition derby.
