A week later, genetic fingerprinting confirmed that the strain of listeria in the milkshakes matched the one responsible for the outbreak.

The Impact on Victims

The six individuals affected by the outbreak were all hospitalized between February 27 and July 22. Health officials are advising anyone who consumed milkshakes at the Tacoma Frugals location during the summer to contact their doctors, as symptoms of listeria infections can take up to 70 days to arise. Fortunately, no other Frugals locations are believed to be affected by the listeria outbreak.

The victims, ranging in age from 40 to 79, all had pre-existing conditions that compromised their immune systems, making it more difficult for their bodies to fight off the infection. While most individuals do not fall seriously ill from consuming listeria-contaminated food, pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and those over the age of 65 are more vulnerable to listeria infections.

Symptoms of listeriosis, the infection caused by listeria, include fever, muscle aches, tiredness, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures. Pregnant women can experience pregnancy loss, premature birth, and serious illness or death in newborns.

Frugals Tacoma, in response to the listeria outbreak, expressed deep sorrow and regret for the impact its actions may have caused. The restaurant chain confirmed that it had discontinued the use of the two ice cream machines and sent them for cleaning and sanitation at an independent facility. The machines will remain out of service until the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department confirms their clearance of listeria contamination.

As a precautionary measure, Frugals has also directed all milkshake machines in its other locations to be shut down for testing. The chain emphasized its commitment to cooperating with the health investigation and making any necessary changes to prevent such incidents from reoccurring. Frugals underscored the importance of customer trust and maintaining high operational standards.
