Next-gen 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Unveiled
New Platform and Design
Toyota has finally lifted the curtain on the highly anticipated next-generation Land Cruiser Prado. This all-new model, the first in 14 years, has undergone a significant transformation both inside and out. The 2024 Prado is now in its fifth generation and features a new Toyota New Global Architecture-F (TNGA-F) platform, which it shares with the J300 Land Cruiser, Lexus GX, and Lexus LX. This new platform is expected to make the Prado a more formidable off-roader. In terms of design, the Prado now sports a boxy look, reminiscent of the iconic Land Cruisers of the past. While it takes inspiration from the Lexus GX, the Prado sets itself apart with clean lines and a practical appearance. The top-tier models come equipped with LED lighting, while the lower models feature rounded lights behind rectangular clusters.
Rugged Yet Modern Interior
Stepping inside the 2024 Land Cruiser Prado reveals a flat, horizontal, two-tier dashboard with a large touchscreen infotainment display. The interior also houses a digital instrument display behind a retro-looking steering wheel with button controls. Toyota has paid homage to traditional analog controls by incorporating a multitude of buttons and switches, including toggles for the selectable drive modes and all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.
Variety of Powertrain Options
The next-generation Prado offers a range of capable powertrain options. Petrol engines include a naturally aspirated 2.7-litre mill with 120 kW and 246 Nm of torque, and a 2.4-litre turbo petrol with 207 kW and 430 Nm of torque. The latter is also available as a mild hybrid, offering 243 kW and 630 Nm of torque. The iconic 4.0-litre V6 engine has been discontinued, making way for two 2.8-litre turbo diesel engines. Both diesel configurations produce 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque. One of the diesel engines comes as a standard mill, while the other is available as a mild hybrid.
New Zealand Pricing and Availability
The all-new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has been confirmed for the New Zealand market. According to Toyota New Zealand, only the 2.8-litre turbodiesel mild hybrid, paired with an eight-speed transmission, will be available in the country. However, specific details regarding pricing and specifications have not yet been released. Toyota New Zealand also stated that all versions of the Prado will come in a three-row, seven-seater configuration. The new Prado SUV is expected to arrive in local Toyota showrooms in early 2024.

A Classic SUV Reinvented
The unveiling of the next-generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado marks an exciting development for SUV enthusiasts. With its new platform, rugged design, and modern interior, the 2024 Prado aims to reclaim its position at the top of the SUV game. The combination of Toyota’s trusted off-road capabilities and the sleek, practical design of the Prado makes it a compelling choice for drivers seeking adventure without sacrificing style and comfort.
The Allure of Analog Controls
In a world increasingly dominated by digital interfaces, Toyota’s decision to incorporate analog controls in the Prado’s interior is a refreshing departure. By including physical buttons and switches for drive modes and AWD systems, Toyota caters to the preferences of drivers who appreciate the tactile feedback and simplicity of analog controls. This thoughtful design choice not only enhances the driving experience but also preserves a sense of tradition and familiarity that has made the Land Cruiser Prado an icon in its own right.
Philosophical Discussion
The Evolution of Off-Road Luxury
The release of the next-generation Land Cruiser Prado raises important questions about the nature of luxury in off-road vehicles. Traditionally, luxury was associated with opulence, comfort, and exclusivity. However, in recent years, there has been a shift towards integrating luxury features with rugged off-road capabilities. The Land Cruiser Prado embodies this shift by offering a balance between refined interior amenities and robust exterior design. This evolution of off-road luxury signifies a recognition that adventure and comfort can coexist, and that a vehicle designed for the great outdoors can also provide a premium driving experience.
The Era of Sustainable Powertrains
Another significant aspect of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is its diverse range of powertrain options, including petrol, hybrid, and diesel engines. This highlights the growing emphasis on sustainability and eco-consciousness in the automotive industry. By offering a variety of powertrains, Toyota provides consumers with the opportunity to choose a model that aligns with their environmental values without compromising on performance. The inclusion of mild hybrid technology also demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency.
